Rangers’ resurgence under Steven Gerrard is very much on, as he is not only rebuilding but also delivering at the same time to ensure an optimistic start to the new season. The Liverpool legend is enjoying his maiden managerial stint at a senior level and already acquired 10 new signings to upgrade the Gers into title challengers after years of disappointment.
He, however, is not done yet in the transfer window and is reportedly ready to table a revised £300,000 offer for Hearts marksman Kyle Lafferty after an initial bid of £200,000 got rejected by the Tynecastle outfit, according to MailSport.
The Northern Ireland international will be 31 this September and despite being Hearts’ top scorer last season with 19 goals in 41 outings, Lafferty has entered the final 12 months of his contract in West Edinburgh. Rangers’ primary offer of £200,000 paid in instalments was labelled as disrespectful but the player’s willingness to return to his former club might see the Jambos agreeing to a settlement reluctantly.
The alleged second bid, however, is unlikely to work out and the Light Blues should step up their chase to stage a reunion with Lafferty who enjoyed the most productive spell of his career at the Ibrox before a financial breakdown.
Rangers parted ways with veteran Kenny Miller upon expiration of his contract and also loaned out Eduardo Herrera to his homeland following a disastrous debut season in Scottish football. They were left with young Alfredo Morelos as the only striking option and Gerrard, therefore, opted to loan in AS Roma youngster Umar Sadiq to add depth to his side’s ‘number 9’ role.
Both the options, nevertheless, are too young to be relied upon for an entire campaign while chasing title glory and adding Lafferty upfront will provide much-needed experience high up the pitch, that the Gers lacked in recent Europa League qualifying round outings.
Lafferty is not one to add 20 goals a season, however, the 6 ft 4 in centre-forward will terrorize the opponents’ defence with his physical as well as aerial supremacy and will create space for speedsters like Josh Windass, Ryan Kent and also Alfredo Morelos in and around the box.

Gerrard will be locking horns with his former boss Brendan Rodgers for the Scottish crown but needs to be well-equipped first to avoid the humiliation they suffered in the recent Old Firm derby encounters. Roping in Lafferty will hand the Light Blues a significant uplift to reconquer glory and restore pride after years of catastrophe.
