Manchester United are looking to secure the services of Chelsea defender Gary Cahill this summer. According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, as claimed by the Express, the Red Devils could look to make a swoop for the England international during this summer transfer period.
The 32-year-old will be a low-risk signing as he has already proven his worth in the English top tier over the past few years. The English defensive ace had put in some solid displays to help the West London outfit win some major silverware in recent history. His signing could turn out to be a shrewd move by Jose Mourinho as he looks to build a strong squad capable of challenging on all fronts next season.
The Chelsea centre-back has a lot of experience of playing at the top level and was one of the best players in the Chelsea team under Mourinho. Cahill has 347 appearances in the English top tier and has 27 goals and 11 assists to his name.
He was a part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad in the 2018 FIFA World Cup but failed to help his country go beyond the semi-finals of the competition where they were narrowly beaten by Croatia with a 2-1 scoreline after extra-time. Cahill is exactly the kind of talent who can flourish under the guidance of Jose Mourinho if given the opportunity to showcase his talents at Old Trafford in the upcoming campaign.
The Reds of Manchester had a campaign without trophies last year and could only manage to finish as the runners-up of the English first division. Hence, Mourinho needs to bring in some quality players so that his team can challenge for top honours next term. A player of Cahill’s quality will give Mourinho’s squad a huge boost and will definitely bolster United’s defensive options ahead of the new season.
The Red Devils have a whole host of defensive talents such as Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelöf and Phil Jones competing for a place in central defence in Mourinho’s first XI. The potential acquisition of Cahill will improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within Mourinho’s squad.

At 32, the England international still has a few years left in him to play at a high level which United could look to benefit from, in the next few seasons. They may need a more long-term option but Cahill represents an immediate solution to an impending problem at Old Trafford.
