According to record.pt, Aston Villa have signed Portuguese custodian Andre Moreira and the 22-year-old is set to be the first signing of the Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens era. Moreira was pictured with the Villa squad in Germany and the move is set to be one on loan. The player currently plies his trade for Atletico Madrid where he has failed to break into the first team.
The Villans have been under financial turmoil and ever since they lost the playoff finals last season, Steve Bruce’s hands were tied in the transfer market. The 6ft 5 inches custodian has been with the Spanish giants since 2014 and has had loan spells at four different clubs.
Ever since the departure of Sam Johnstone to West Bromwich Albion, the Villans were in need of a goalkeeper. The arrival of Moreira will certainly be a big boost for them as far as the area of goalkeeping is concerned.
There have been strong rumours of Thierry Henry taking the club mantle after his stint with Belgium can be termed as a successful one as the Red Devils made their best ever finish in the World Cup.
It will be interesting to see which option Bruce will go after as he needs to decide on the no. 1 custodian. Jed Steer has been waiting in the wings to get his opportunity and with Moreira coming in, he will have to fight for his place. The Clarets and Blues came perilously close to qualifying to the Premier League last season, however, they came short on the final hurdle and since then, the club has been in the doldrums. Though since the new takeover, things don’t look as bad as one thought it to be.
The 22-year-old has represented the Portuguese national team at various youth levels and is being touted as a future senior team player. All of his past loan spells have come in the Portuguese league so a move to England will be a big challenge for the player. However, he seems to have everything in his repertoire that will make him successful in the Championship.
Having a good goalkeeper is of utmost importance and Bruce would have been feeling the heat when Johnstone parted ways with the club after an impressive last season at Villa Park. It remains to be seen how Moreira will venture in the English Championship. All in all hopefully a good signing for the Villans.
