Norwich City have fallen way below the pecking order in English football as they finished 14th last term. They were plying their trade in the Premier League not so long ago, however, they look far away from even qualifying for the Championship playoffs. The Canaries recently extended the contract of their highly rated midfielder Ben Godfrey for another year.
The 20-year-old was being linked with a move to other Championship and Premier League clubs, however, this new deal will certainly put off the interested teams as his latest contract runs up until 2022. The defensive midfielder spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town where he helped his side reach the League One play-off final where they lost to Rotherham United.
The Canaries manager Daniel Farke seemed delighted with the new deal and said,”Ben had a really good loan spell and we were convinced that he would be good when he came back. In pre-season so far, he’s been there with some really good performances and it’s been important that he’s been able to play quite a few positions. He’s another good option for us and I’m very pleased with Ben. There’s no time for him to have another loan spell because we are convinced he can help us in the short-term and long-term.”
Godfrey can also play in the centre-back role and that will benefit the Canaries as they struggled to keep it tight last season. He made 53 appearances in the last campaign and played most of it in the defensive midfield role. He can be termed as a ‘disrupter’ in the middle of the park as his major goal is to break the opposition’s play and intercept passes. With him being comfortable on the ball, it allows his side to play out from the back.
The Canaries will be looking to close the gap between other clubs in the upcoming season as they were 15 points behind the playoff spot. Godfrey has risen up the ranks from the youth level at Carrow Road. However, he is yet to be a regular for them in the first team as he has made just six senior team appearances.

One can expect him to get more game time at the top level next season after his impressive outings in the League One where he played a major role in bringing Shrewsbury Town on the verge of Championship qualifications.
