Liverpool are looking to mount a massive challenge on all fronts in the upcoming season and they seem to have the firepower in all the departments to win a substantial trophy. After the Champions League final debacle, the Reds went on to sign Alisson Becker for a record amount and that has definitely propelled them to be the biggest rivals arguably to stop Manchester City‘s juggernaut in the upcoming season.
Jurgen Klopp recently gave an interview where he indicated that the Reds are done with their transfer dealings. He said,”We have everything we need for the next season because I don’t think we will do anything more (in the market), I’m pretty sure of that. We have the squad now for the moment, and that’s the most important thing. We were not too bad last year but we had to improve and we tried that on the transfer market.”
He added further, “We lost one or two players and we brought in a few. I’m really happy with our signings to be honest, so now let’s use the last few weeks of pre-season to be as good as possible.”
However, there still seems to be a demand for a centre back. According to Daily Record journalist Ian McGarry, he believes that Virgil Van Dijk has asked the Reds to sign a centre back in the ongoing transfer market. The Reds have been linked with quite a few of them, however, nothing is close to materialising as of now.
McGarry had this to say on the Transfer Window podcast.“I am told by people close to Van Dijk that he has requested a new central defensive partner through Jurgen Klopp. He wants the defence to be up to standard as it possibly can be.”
The Merseyside outfit have been dealt a blow even before the season began as Joel Matip suffered an injury during a pre-season game and has returned from America to Melwood to continue his recovery and rehabilitation. The extent of the injury is not known but it is likely that he will not be ready for the start of the new season.
Dejan Lovren has improved leaps and bounds but is set to join the squad late due to his exploits in the World Cup with Croatia. That leaves the club only with viable options in Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez along with Virgil Van Dijk. So maybe there is still a place for a new defender on the roster.

To win big titles, having a strong eleven is as important as having a strong depth in the squad. Given Matip’s injury track record and Klopp’s high-intensity playing style, the Reds should cover themselves in all departments if they want to break the shackles and win something substantial. Maybe it won’t be a bad idea for Klopp to go after a centre-back option to sort the defensive issues once and for all.
