Jose Mourinho is into his third season at Old Trafford and cannot afford to spend another year without bringing the league title back to the Red half of Manchester. The squad at his disposal is easily one of the strongest in the league but the quality in teams around them is on the rise and it will need Mourinho to add some star players to his side this summer.
This has seen them linked with some of the most exciting names in Europe and one player they have now registered their interest in is Spanish international Thiago Alcantara.
Born and brought up in Italy, the 27-year old joined Barcelona’s academy in 2005 and broke into the senior side just three years later. He made 68 La Liga appearances, winning two league titles and a Champions League title before moving to Germany with Bayern Munich in 2013. He has been a regular in the senior side at Allianz Arena but has never made more than 30 league appearances in a single season.
He does have five league titles to his name, in his six years at the club but was not used regularly last season. He made just 12 Bundesliga starts, registering two goals and two assists, and also made just two appearances for his national side in Russia.
He is a gifted technician with great close control and even better vision. He is adept at controlling the tempo of the game, commanding the ball in the middle of the park and facilitating switch of play. He also reads the game well and makes important interceptions, often creating chances for his side.
He is an attacking minded player but does not shy away from his defensive duties and at 27, will be at his peak in the next few years. However, the German giants have up to 8 first team midfielders in their side and though they want to hold on to him, they could also choose to let him go at the right price. Barcelona were interested in taking him back to Camp Nou but were quoted a price of €70m. However, reports now suggest that Chelsea and Manchester United have both enquired about his availability in this transfer market.
The Red Devils, like Barcelona, might not be ready to meet his valuation, especially after signing a midfielder this summer in Fred. Mourinho also needs to improve on other areas of the squad and is not really in need of a playmaker at the moment.

Alcantara’s addition can only make them stronger and even at that price, he is a real asset for even a club like Manchester United. But do you think the Red Devils should meet his asking price this summer?
