Chelsea have finally managed to land Maurizio Sarri this summer but the Italian manager does not have too much time to work on improving his squad this summer. With less than two weeks of the transfer window left, Sarri is now desperate to make sure that he has all the tools to launch a title challenge next season.
The Blues are still in the transfer market to improve on certain areas in the squad and continue to be linked with some of the finest stars in Europe. However, one player they are now set to sign, raising quite a few eyebrows in the process, is former English goalkeeper Robert Green.
Having started his senior career with Norwich City, Green played 223 games for the Canaries before joining West Ham United in 2006. He spent six long years in London, making 219 Premier League appearances but he lost his place in the English national side and at West Ham in 2012, after a series of below-par performances.
He spent time at QPR and Leeds United before joining Huddersfield Town in the Premier League last summer on a one year deal. He is out of a contract at the moment and it looked like he will hang up his gloves but, in what comes as a surprise to most Chelsea fans, the Blues are set to bring him in on a free transfer this summer.
He will only be offered a one year deal and a chance to play for the Blues might be too hard for Green to ignore. But at 38, he is not a first-team option and is only being signed as a backup.
An excellent shot-stopper with decent distribution, Green has a safe pair of hands and stands as one of the most experienced shot-stoppers in England at the moment. At his age, he is no longer an agile presence under the bar and also made just a single appearance all season for the Terriers.
So he is only expected to be below Willy Caballero in the pecking order for Sarri. But why will Chelsea sign him? The Blues have Thibaut Courtois as a regular in the first team and if they end up losing him, as a few reports suggest, Chelsea will certainly replace him with a similar player.

However, Sarri allowed Jamal Blackman to join Leeds on loan and is without a third-choice glove-man at Stamford Bridge. This is where Green is as good a fit as any. He is not expected to start games regularly but is an able backup to contingencies and on a free transfer, is certainly worth the fuss. But do you think Chelsea should have offered a youngster this role in the squad?
