With just 17 wins and 60 points to their name in the Championship last season, Leeds United failed to trouble the teams in the top half of the table and struggled to even break out of the bottom half of the table. Neither Paul Heckingbottom nor Thomas Christiansen made any real impact on the competition as both managers won less than 1.5 points per game last season.
The Whites were seemingly losing their grip on the Championship and looked to be in real danger of stagnation next season but the hierarchy at the club have acted quickly and have managed to land Marcelo Bielsa, who stands as one of the most respected coaches in the world at the moment.
Having spent time with the Argentine and Chile national sides, the 63-year old has worked with some of the finest stars in the game but is now responsible to get Leeds United back to the Premier League in the upcoming years. He was in Ligue 1 with Lille before joining Leeds United and his addition to the squad at Elland Road is expected to help the club lure some top transfer targets to the club this summer.
The manager has already taken Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker on loan from Chelsea but is yet to spend on a star player, who can make an immediate impact on the squad next season. He is desperate to upgrade on a number of areas in the squad and former West Ham United and Norwich City midfielder Dean Ashton feels that this is the right time for the club to make big money moves in the transfer market.
Speaking to the media recently, Ashton felt that Leeds have failed to attract quality to Elland Road recently, due to lack of a spark and attraction at the club. However, with Bielsa’s appointment, that could all be changing this summer.
“You’re always hopeful when you get a manager like that, who has the experience, a star factor, you hope he can bring into the squad something you wouldn’t have got with a different manager,” he said in a recent interview.
It is quite evident that the upcoming campaign and this summer transfer window are pretty crucial for the club’s chances of promotion in the near future and Ashton felt that the club can now finally land exciting players, with the lure to play under Bielsa.

“If I was a Leeds fan I’d be excited by the manager but I want to see him bring in a few more, not necessarily household names but players to excite, players who can make that real difference in the league,” he added. But do you think Leeds can finally land a player who can take them back to the top flight?
