Rangers FC were looking to ship Greg Docherty out to Sunderland to facilitate some more senior team football in the upcoming season. However, latest reports claim that the Black Cats have no interest in signing the 21-year-old midfielder. Speaking to the press, Sunderland manager, Jack Ross said, “No [he won’t be joining]. That’s not to say he’s not a good player, but we have other priorities at the moment positionally. We have a squad with no out-and-out strikers.”
Docherty has drawn heavy links with the League One outfit mostly due to Ross’ recent recruitment trail. Five of the seven signings made during this summer window have prior experience of playing in Scotland. It was assumed that the departure of Paddy McNair would prompt the newly appointed boss to go after replacements.
The Rokerites are starting afresh in the English third division following two consecutive relegations. An immediate performance boost and a jump back to top-flight football are expectations from their new management. However, with Docherty having no place in their plans, where does this leave Steven Gerrard and the Rangers?
Gerrard has been recently handed over the reigns of the Glasgow based club and has been tasked with returning the club to title-winning ways. The former England captain has made a ton of additions this summer and is seemingly on the lookout for more. While the new arrivals have cost a tidy sum, Gerrard will have to clear space in the club ranks for further additions. He will also have to pay close attention to the club’s youngsters and to their footballing development.
Docherty, who played no part in the Gers’ Europa League qualifier against FK Shukpi, was signed under Graeme Murty last summer and he went on to make 10 Premiership appearances for the side. The midfielder signed a four-and-a-half year contract with his boyhood club, expecting to be a major part of its future.
However, the regime change could very well halt his professional growth and the best approach for him and Gerrard would be to look at alternate options. A spell in the English League One could do wonders to his career and his chances of future Rangers involvement.
Docherty already boasts an impressive resume, having played in 109 games for Hamilton Academical while scoring on 8 occasions. The 21-year-old can operate from deep-lying midfield positions as well as from attacking roles.

His versatility and eagerness to learn should play a factor in tying down a loan agreement with another club.
