Leeds United have been unsuccessful in their attempts to convince Diego Polenta to ply his trade at Elland Road next season. According to recent reports, the Peacocks have failed to convince the Uruguayan centre-back to join Marcelo Bielsa’s revolution at West Yorkshire during this summer transfer period.
Some sources have recently claimed that the Yorkshire giants were trying to lure the player to English football on a free transfer but their efforts were in vain.
Polenta is now likely to return to Uruguayan side Nacional much to the dismay of the Leeds faithful. He has previously won two league titles with Nacional while leading the team and making over 80 appearances for the club.
With the Peacocks missing out on Polenta, let’s take a look at three alternatives for Bielsa to consider in this off-season.
Ben Mee
The Burnley defensive ace was a rock at the backline for Sean Dyche’s overachieving team during the course of the last campaign. He will be an ideal replacement for Polenta and could turn out to a shrewd signing if the Whites can pull off such a deal. The 28-year-old sensation had featured in 30 matches for the Clarets last season and played a monumental part in his team’s climb to the top half of the league rankings in the last campaign.
Ahmed Hegazi
The West Bromwich Albion centre-half has put in some impressive performances at the Hawthorns during the course of last season. The Whites can offer him regular first-team football at Elland Road after missing out on Polenta this summer, which might be enough to convince him to join Marcelo Bielsa’s revolution at the West Yorkshire club.
The Egyptian international is vastly experienced at the highest level having played a full season in the English top-flight while also featuring for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup which makes him a perfect fit for Leeds United.
David Abraham
The Argentine was a regular feature at the back for Eintracht Frankfurt last season and his spectacular displays have helped his side achieve a top half finish in the Bundesliga table last term. The main reason for the German team’s recent good fortune was primarily down to Abraham’s defensive contributions.
