Wolves are currently leading the race to sign Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario this summer. According to some United Kingdom bookmakers, the West Midlands side have leapfrogged West Ham United in the chase to secure the services of the Portuguese midfielder during this summer transfer period.
Mario has been touted to leave Milan this summer with East London being the most likely destination according to the bookies. However, it has now emerged that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side has edged ahead of the Hammers in the race to recruit the talented Portuguese sensation in this post-season. Skybet has priced Wolves to sign Mario before the end of the transfer window at 11/4 while Manuel Pellegrini’s team has fallen behind and are currently listed at 6/1.
The 25-year-old had featured in 14 matches for West Ham in the second half of the last campaign, scoring two goals while providing one assist. Mario is exactly the kind of player who can thrive under the stewardship of Nuno Santo at the Molineaux Stadium if given the opportunity to showcase his talents once again in the English top-flight. At 25, the Portuguese ace still has his best years ahead of him which the Wolves could look to utilise in the next few seasons.
The Premier League new boys had a terrific campaign last term when they managed to earn a promotion by winning the Skybet Championship. However, Nuno Santo would be aware that he needs to add more quality to his squad during this ongoing transfer period if his players are to avoid relegation next year.
The addition of Mario will undoubtedly bolster Santo’s midfield options at the West Midlands club. Wolves have some talented midfielders such as Ruben Neves, Romain Saïss, Morgan Gibbs-White and Pedro António Pereira Gonçalves competing for a place at the centre of the park. The potential acquisition of Mario will definitely improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Wolves squad.

The Porto-born midfield ace is quite versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the midfield. He primarily plays in an attacking midfield role but can also feature on either flank which makes him a perfect fit for Santo’s team. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Mario and whether he ends up plying his trade at the Molineaux before the start of the new season.
