Brighton and Hove Albion will look to continue their rise in English football and they will be aware that they need to add more depth to their squad. They have been active in the transfer market and recently secured their fifth signing of the summer by bringing in former Fulham goalkeeper David Button.
The 29-year-old has an experience of over 170 games in the Championship, however, he is yet to make his debut in the English top flight. Last season, he had made 21 appearances for the Cottagers in all competitions and managed 3 clean sheets. The Seagulls have signed him on a three-year deal and their gaffer Chris Hughton seemed delighted with the business they did.
He said,” We’re delighted to bring a goalkeeper of David’s experience to the club. He has a wealth of experience, having made over 300 appearances during his career so far, and I’m sure he will work well with Maty Ryan and Jason Steele.”
Button started his career with Tottenham Hotspur but didn’t get a chance to represent them in the Premier League. His 5-year stint with the North London club was marred with various loan spells to lower division clubs before he moved on to join Charlton Athletic. He played for as many as 12 different clubs on loan when he was with Spurs.
The Seagulls were not given much of a chance to survive in the Premier League but Hughton’s men certainly punched above their weight and secured a 15th place finish. The challenge in the upcoming season will be huge as new entrants like Wolves, Fulham and Cardiff City look strong contenders to survive.
Mathew Ryan, the Australian goalkeeper will be the obvious no.1 choice at the club. He had some heroic performances last term and played every minute for his side in the Premier League keeping 10 clean sheets. It looks unlikely that the manager will tinker with the first choice option.
Button didn’t seem to mind that he won’t be the first choice option and indicated that he will be happy to fight for his spot. He said,’’ There’s a lot of competition in my position and I want to be a part of that. They’re (Ryan and Steele) both great goalkeepers and I’m looking forward to working with them and helping us all improve.’

Button had represented England at the u-20 level but his career didn’t take off as expected. However, he is still a reliable option to have in goal and will add competition for places at the Falmer Stadium.
