TalkSPORT reports Newcastle United and Scottish Champions Celtic are vying it out for the signature of Giorgian de Arrascaeta from Cruzeiro. The 24-year-old represents Uruguay at the international level and has 16 caps to his name, ever since his debut in 2014.
With age on his side, there is vast space for improvement in his game and a stint in Europe would be an interesting challenge for the attacking midfielder to test his abilities overseas. Arrascaeta made two appearances for his national team where he played a part at representing Uruguay at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He failed to cement a place in Oscar Tabarez’s team and eventually found himself cheering the team on from the bench.
Arrascaeta is good at a dead ball situation and is known to be clinical in front of goal, attributes which make him a reliable source of goal during a game. Though not a proven goal scorer, the Uruguayan is technically adept which makes dispossessing him off of the ball a tricky task, although not an impossible one.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is keen to add the attacking midfielder to his ranks and is willing to spend a sum believed to be near about £18m for him. Having agreed to a renewal of contract under Cruzeiro before his World Cup dreams began, the player demanded that if suitable offers did come along for him, he would be allowed to vacate his post and end his affiliation with the club.
He would be expected to slot into a midfield four which boasts the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung-Yueng, Mohamed Diame and Rolando Aarons as the Magpies set themselves up with a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 approach. Kenedy and Dwight Gayle might also find themselves starting in contention for a regular place in the Spaniard’s team. The Cruzeiro man was on the verge of signing for French club Monaco last season but suffered a fallout over personal terms which put an end to his hopes of plying his trade outside South America.
Life in the Premier League will be a new challenge for the player who has no knowledge about the footballing life outside his known comfort zone. Newcastle have been strengthening their squad for the upcoming season and Arrascaeta would be a good resource to indulge in if his presence on the field facilitate the Magpies’ hunger to better themselves and score more goals than they did last term.
