It seems that Mauricio Pochettino has left his transfer window this summer to the last few weeks. The Argentine has just over three weeks of the window left, but he is yet to make a new signing this summer. However, Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with some of the finest stars in Europe and the latest name doing the rounds is Benjamin Pavard.
Pochettino’s side have been defensively one of the best sides in the league for the last couple of seasons but are in danger of losing their first team star Toby Alderweireld this summer. The Belgian international has rejected a contract extension in London and is looking for a new challenge in the Premier League.
Manchester United have shown interest in his services and Pochettino is ready to let him leave at the right price. He seems to have given up on keeping Alderweireld at the club as reports suggest that he sees the young French international Pavard as his long-term replacement.
The 22-year old started his senior career with Lille but joined Stuttgart in 2016, after which he has established himself on the European stage. Playing mainly as a centre-back, he made 36 Bundesliga appearances last season and his consistency saw him earn a place in the French national side for the World Cup.
Pavard did not disappoint in Russia, starting every game for his country and putting in some memorable performances, scoring a stunner against Argentina, starting mainly as a full-back. He was crucial in France going all the way this year and it is quite normal that he will now attract interests from a number of clubs this summer.
He is a strong and confident defender, happy to carry the ball out from the back. He is hard to beat in the air, is positionally astute and has a bright future ahead of him. At just 22, he has already established himself at the highest level, earning a lot of experience at the biggest stage and ticks most boxes in Pochettino’s recruitment system.
He is young and ready for first team action and can be a decent fit for Pochettino’s system and the English game. Reports suggest that the Spurs will have to shell out up to £44m for his services. They are expected to sell Alderweireld for around £50m, making Pavard a decent option.

He is a long-term replacement for the Belgian and alongside Davinson Sanchez, will work with Jan Vertonghen before he can truly announce himself to the English league. His lack of experience in the country could be an issue but do you think Pavard and his versatility are a good fit for Spurs?
