Inter Milan has just been granted a massive boost in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Mousa Dembele. As the Chinese transfer window closed shut last night, the chances of the Belgian’s transfer to the Far East also ended. Now, the Serie A outfit is looking to get their man at a much cheaper rate than the initial Spurs asking price of €30m, as reported by Calciomercato.
Much to the shock of the Tottenham fans, Dembele has been linked with a move away from the club. The initial understanding was of the player’s monetary gain which Chinese Super League outfits promise right from the get-go.
We have seen plenty of top professionals quit their respective clubs for mammoth contracts at the Asian nation. Dembele, who is about to turn 31 might just have been plotting a move too in search of a nice retirement nest while also prolonging his footballing career.
Everyone is well aware of the demands of the Premier League football and especially of Mauricio Pochettino in the Tottenham ranks. However, it is absurd to think that Dembele will sacrifice his starting role in one of the Premier League’s title-contending side so late into his career.
He is one of the most underrated midfielders in the English top-flight and has played a key role in the overall evolution of Tottenham in recent seasons. Not only can Pochettino not afford to lose him, the 30-year-old himself might not receive the similar level of respect and love as he does at White Hart Lane.
The Belgian can defend, pass and most importantly, hold onto possession against all odds. Pochettino has relied on him heavily all season long to carry out the holding midfield role with Victor Wanyama glued to the sidelines with injury.
Dembele created a formidable partnership with Eric Dier in the midfield to really drive Tottenham’s high pressing offensive style of play. He had made 39 appearances across all competitions last term, increasing his tally to 236 overall matches for the North London outfit.
He also represented his country in the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup, held in Russia. The veteran now has 80 caps to his name for the Belgium national team and 26 in total for the youth sides.

With Inter bidding goodbye to Eder and Vecino also being shopped around, Dembele will be a necessary addition for the Italian giants ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. Pochettino is also looking at Columbian international, Wilmar Barrios as a potential replacement, thus opening up the path for a final agreement.
