Swansea City’s Oliver McBurnie have put all transfer rumours surrounding him to rest by signing a new deal till the summer of 2021. The Welsh outfit does have an option to extend the contract for another season which they might if the 22-year-old fulfils his ambitions of becoming a starter. Speaking to the club’s website, he said, “I want to play regular football. That was one of the key things for me. If you want to be playing international football, as I do, you need to be playing first-team football for your club. If you are not playing regularly, you are not going to get picked. I have only had four starts at Swansea. Now I want to prove myself to the gaffer and everyone else and show that I can be a mainstay in this team.”
The striker is in search of a prominent role at the Liberty Stadium while Graham Potter plans on returning the side to Premier League football. Current forwards, Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Bony are expected to be sold off this very summer in order to recuperate some of the lost cash through the relegation woes.
McBurnie boasts of massive potential and does have the ability to become an attacking talisman in the near future. He started out in the Leeds United youth ranks but was released when he was 14. Bradford City signed him up and later offered him a three-year deal in 2013.
He featured in 20 of the club’s senior games while also spending two seasons out on loan with Chester. The Swans picked him up in the summer of 2015 and the striker became an immediate hit for the U21s.
McBurnie scored 34 times in just 36 games for the U23 squad while also registering 6 assists. His incredible scoring tally brought to notice some of the elite European clubs and City decided to send him out to Newport County, Bristol Rovers and recently Barnsley for more footballing development.
McBurnie played in 17 Championship games for the Tykes last season and delivered with 9 goals. He also racked up 10 goals in 7 Premier League 2 games for the Swans in the earlier half of the 2017/18 campaign. Clearly, many have overlooked his attacking abilities and it is time he gets a chance to prove his worth for the City senior squad.

Potter is a manager known to promote young talent and having such a promising talent like McBurnie will prevent him from spending exorbitant amounts on Bony or Ayew replacements.
