Huddersfield Town will be looking to continue their miraculous rise in English football as they try to establish themselves as a regular top-flight club. Not many of the pundits gave them the chance last season to survive, but David Wagner’s men punched above their weight to clinch the 16th spot in the table. The German gaffer will be aware that surviving will be a tough task again as newly promoted clubs like Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham look quite dangerous.
To carry on their run, the Terriers need to bring more reinforcements to their squad and they have done just that by signing German fullback Erik Durm from Borussia Dortmund. It is not clear how much Huddersfield paid to sign the player but the player has signed a one year contract at the club with an option to extend for another year.
On his new acquisition, Wagner said, “It is not every day that you can bring a player of the quality of Erik to your Club. He is a World Cup winner and has played at the very highest level, so this is a fantastic day for Huddersfield Town. Obviously, I know Erik well from our time together at Dortmund and he has all the qualities to be a great success in our ‘Terriers Identity’.”
He further added,”He has been very unfortunate with injuries for a year now, but he was training with Dortmund at the end of the season and he’s passed our medical with flying colours this week. That’s no surprise to me; he was always one of the fittest players at Dortmund and has great physical attributes; real stamina and speed.”
Durm has seven caps for Germany and the 26-year-old was part of Germany’s squad which won the World Cup in 2014. He missed the entire last season due to various injuries. A serious hip injury kept him out from July to December last year. He was close to recovery but he suffered a torn ankle ligament in January which kept him sidelined for the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old is a versatile player as he can play down both the flanks either in defence or midfield. That will be a huge advantage for Wagner. The manager has already worked with him before, so he will be aware of the player’s strength and weaknesses. The major problem is that Durm is coming off a long injury layoff and we have often seen a player find it tough to get back to their best. This can also be the reason why the Terriers have signed him on just a one-year deal.
