Angus Gunn always had an uphill battle when trying to vie for a spot in the Manchester City senior team. With goalkeeper Ederson Moraes in the frame, it was always going to be a tough ask for Gunn to displace the Brazilian shot-stopper to earn a place in the Manchester City starting 11.
Angus Gunn, who is a regular in England under 21 setup, now finds himself departing Manchester as he is confirmed as a Southampton player. In what is believed to be a £13.5million deal for the shot-stopper, Manchester City have done well to part ways with a relatively unproven goalkeeper for the stipulated amount.
The Citizens already have experienced goalkeepers in the form of Claudio Bravo and Joe Hart battling for a place on the teamsheet. They both will have to do extremely well if they are to be successful in displacing current number 1 Ederson.
The Brazilian will turn 25 in August and has a long way to grow and improve as a keeper. His time at Manchester will only help develop himself further into a renowned shot-stopper. This gives the likes of Bravo and Hart not much of a fighting chance to reclaim their place between the crossbars, despite both being players with bucket loads of experience. Evidently, this leaves a youngster like Gunn with barely any chance to see himself feature in a City jersey.
The deal sees Gunn have both a buy-back clause as well as a sell on clause inserted into his current Southampton contract. The final sum will increase to £13.5 million with different aspects of Gunn’s departure to Southampton come into play.
Gunn spent last season on loan at Norwich City and racked up 46 appearances at Carrow Road. He became an instant hit with the Canaries as he became almost indispensable to the team. His eagerness to continue playing regularly pushed him to come to the conclusion that a move away from the Etihad Stadium would do him a world of good. Young players need all the game time they can get in order to continue their paths in developing into a household name in the world of football and Gunn has taken the right decision from that point of view.

Goalkeeper Fraser Forster had a poor season in goal for the Saints in the last season and the club have done well to bring in Gunn this summer. It would provide the opportunity for a rise in a challenge for both the Englishmen as competition will only make them better professionals as they want to keep a place in the starting 11. It is expected that Gunn will be the one to start the season beneath the crossbars for the Saints and thus the move can be termed as a very good one for all parties involved.
