Domagoj Vida would have been a relatively unknown name for most of the football fans. However, now that he has helped his country reach the semi-finals of the World Cup, Vida is being linked with a move to quite a few Premier League clubs including Everton. Vida currently plies his trade for Turkish outfit Besiktas who he joined in the January transfer window this year and now he could very much move away after just a few months with them.
Some reports suggest that Everton’s Merseyside rival Liverpool have tabled a €18m bid for the player. However, Besiktas are going to demand €35m for him. Everton can certainly pay such amounts given the fact that they are backed by Farhad Moshiri and it will be interesting to see whether the Toffees will go all in for a Vida after the World Cup.
Everton are in desperate need of a new centre-half as they are currently short on option in that department. They recently parted ways with Ramiro Funes Mori who joined Villareal and Ashley Williams has also expressed his frustration at the club. Phil Jagielka is on the wrong side of his thirties now and one cannot expect him to start week in week out in one of the toughest leagues of the world.
Marco Silva is inheriting an aging defence and he will be desperate to bring some solid options during this transfer period. Vida might not be the youngest of the lot as he is 29. However, his performances in the World Cup has caused a frenzy among Premier League clubs.
Everton are looking for a new beginning under Marco Silva as they will look to challenge the big boys of the Premier League. The team needs to sort out their ageing defence as the likes of Jagielka and Leighton Baines cannot be entrusted to do the job in every game.
The Croatian has had good games for his country in the World Cup but the club should be careful before making a move as we have quite often seen players unable to replicate their national level performance at the club level. The fact that he plies his trade for Besiktas and has never played in the top 5 leagues of the world regularly shows that he won’t find it easy to adjust to life in the English top flight.
Plus he is 29, so one can expect him to improve drastically and the money demanded by Besiktas is way too overboard. Hence, it might not be a bad idea for Marco Silva to stay away from the Croatian ace.
