Manchester United main man Jose Mourinho can finally step up his recruitment plans this summer with the World Cup finally reduced to just four games. The former Chelsea boss has a number of transfer targets that he is desperate to sign this summer and one player, who they are now close to signing, is Willian.
The Brazilian winger, who did not have the greatest of World Cup in Russia, in spite of starting most games for Tite’s men, has struggled for game time under Antonio Conte last season at Chelsea. Reports suggest that Mourinho, who worked with Willian in their time at Stamford Bridge, is ready to take him to Old Trafford this summer.
The 29-year old has just two years left on his current deal in London and United are ready to pay up to £60m for his services. This could be a productive deal for all involved but is Willian worth the fuss for the Red Devils?
Having joined Chelsea back in 2013, Willian made an immediate impact at the club, making 25 league appearances in his debut season. He went on to win two league titles and an FA Cup in his time with Chelsea and was named the Players’ Player Of The Year at the club for the previous season.
However, Willian managed only 20 league starts, not fitting into Conte’s 3-5-2 system. He still registered six goals and seven assists and scored some crucial goals for the side, showing his quality. Even at 29, he still has a fair number of years at the top of his game and can be a huge asset for any team he joins.
The Red Devils have no out-right winger in their squad with Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial playing on the flanks. The lack of a player who can naturally add width and directness to the attack was quite evident last season so it does not come as a surprise that Mourinho wants a familiar face to solve this issue at Old Trafford.
At £60m, he is tad expensive but his experience and style of play have made him Mourinho’s top transfer target this summer. he suits Mourinho’s system, has previously played under the Portuguese manager and will add a different dimension to the United attack.

His signing will probably spell the end of Anthony Martial, who will also be sold for a handsome figure. So signing Willian, who is in his prime, makes a lot of sense for the Red Devils this summer.
