Leeds United have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Peterborough United’s Marcus Maddison as the League One outfit officially revealed their intentions to sell the player this summer. Speaking to the Peterborough official website, Chairman, Darragh MacAnthony said, “When I sat down with Marcus last August and agreed a new contract with him, I gave him my verbal assurances that were we to fall short and not gain promotion, I would allow him to leave the club subject to an offer acceptable to the football club and place him on the transfer list.”
“He has had an incredible career with the Posh and it is only right that I stick to my word and give him the best chance possible to further his ambitions of playing further up the football pyramid so with sadness today (Thursday), I can confirm he is available for transfer.”
Now Marco Bielsa just has to table a convincing offer and initiate negotiations with the Posh for an immediate transfer. Maddison is one of the best players in the League One, as reiterated by MacAnthony in his official statement and could have been subject to transfer for millions of pounds if he played in the upper divisions.
The 24-year-old is coming off his 4th season with Peterborough. During his tenure, he has racked 42 goals and 61 assists in 177 total games. He grabbed 23 of those assists last term alone and also scored 8 to help the Posh make a run for the promotion playoffs.
Maddison’s contract is set to run till the summer of 2020, which could help Peterborough bargain for a better price. The Englishman has finally been able to gain recognition of a Championship outfit after failing to make the cut for the Newcastle United senior squad.
He started off in the Magpies youth ranks to make 15 appearances, 4 goals and 3 assists for the U23 side. He was loaned out to Blyth Spartans and was later released in 2013. St Johnstone signed him up but Maddison could not make a single first appearance and was forced to move out to Gateshead.
The 24-year-old finally got to showcase his skills with the Tyneside outfit and won himself the Conference Premier Player Of The Month in January 2014. He is now a proven professional in the English third division with a lot of potential to succeed at a higher stage.
