Before the World Cup began Liverpool had thought they had made a smart piece of business by acquiring Nabil Fekir. However, the Frenchman’s deal fell through in spectacular circumstances. There were concerns regarding his past knee injury and as a result, Liverpool wanted to renegotiate the terms of the contract. Though the deal is not over yet as is it is expected that Liverpool will resurrect their interest in the attacking midfielder once the player is back from Russia.
Both parties had agreed to a £53m deal according to some reports and it will be interesting to see whether Liverpool will be able to bring down that number given his medical condition. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder from France also happens to be the club captain and the French outfit Lyon will try tooth and nail to keep hold of their star man.
Fekir had a promising campaign last term as he managed to score 23 goals and 8 assists from 40 encounters. The player will be a handy addition to Liverpool’s squad if the Reds decide to go after him once again after the World Cup.
Many people might consider that the Merseyside club doesn’t need attacking reinforcements but the Reds have been found wanting when any of their star front trio has missed a game due to injuries. In the Champions League final, Mohamed Salah was out due to an unfortunate incident involving Sergio Ramos and Liverpool had to bring in an unprepared Adam Lallana in the biggest game of their season.
Liverpool hadn’t missed Philippe Coutinho much since his departure from Anfield but it is an absolute necessity for them to have someone like Fekir in the squad who can provide that moment of magic and spark.
The fans are divided on the opinion of Liverpool’s stance regarding Fekir. Some are of the opinion that the club should have wrapped up the deal given the fact that Fekir is fit and good enough to play in the World Cup for his country. Some believe that the Reds have done the right thing by stalling the deal given his medical record.
