Manchester United will be looking to bolster their squad for the upcoming season as they ended up trophyless last campaign. It is expected that Jose Mourinho will revamp their ageing defence as he looks to challenge their derby rivals Manchester City, who ran away with the league title with relative comfort under Pep Guardiola last season. Quite a few players can be cut from United and one of them is Daley Blind who has struggled to get much game time under the Portuguese manager.
Blind was the signing of Louis Van Gaal and he was a relatively important player for the Dutch manager. However, with his appearances limited under the Portuguese tactician, the 28-year-old versatile player is being linked with a move to his former club Ajax. The Dutch international made just 8 appearances in the Premier League in the last campaign and it doesn’t seem like there is any future for him at Old Trafford.
Blind has played in various positions for the Red Devils over the past few years. He can play as a left back, centre back and even as a defensive midfielder. However, Mourinho doesn’t see him being good enough to start.
Blind is just 28 so one cannot deny that he is well past his prime. He has made 114 appearances for them and it looks like his run with one of the biggest clubs in the world is set to come to an end.
Blind may not be quickest across the pitch but he sure has a footballing brain which makes him a good asset to have in the side. What he lacks in pace and strength he makes it up in intelligence and positional sense. He has the ability to pick a pass and can be a viable option as a deep-lying playmaker.
One can agree to the fact that he won’t cut out as a left back in the Premier League given the pace and physicality of the English game but he still has various traits to his game which can be utilised.
With Ajax coming into the picture to sign him, it seems likely that Mourinho won’t play hardball in letting the Dutchman leave. We often see Mourinho prefer players who have terrific work rate and can carry out their defensive tasks dutifully.

With no other Premier League club in the picture to sign him, a move to his homeland and former club Ajax will certainly be a welcome change in the player’s career.
