As per latest reports, Bournemouth are looking to sign Leganes defender Diego Rico. The club has made an initial enquiry with the Spanish side and we can see some further development happening in the future. Rico is a 25-year-old left back who has been impressive for his side as they avoided relegation with relative comfort in the Spanish top division.
The player joined Leganes in 2016 from Real Zaragoza and since then, he has made the left-back spot his own. He had made 33 appearances in all competitions and managed 3 goals and 2 assists last season. The Spaniard helped his side finish 17th with 43 points while Deportivo de La Coruna finished 18th and got relegated with 29 points. So one can clearly say that Leganes had a safe passage in the La Liga last season.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth have continued their rise in English football under Eddie Howe. The Cherries haven’t compromised with their extravagant playing style and they finished at a very respectable 12th place. Howe will surely like to improve further and make this team into a regular top half side in the next few years. For that, he will have to make some improvements to his squad by bringing in some quality reinforcements. It seems like they have currently zeroed in on the Spanish defender to bring solidity at the back.
Leganes caused a massive upset in the quarterfinals of Copa Del Rey as they went past Real Madrid over the two legs. Rico played a major role over the two legs as he kept the Madrid players silent down the left flank. The player’s contract with the La Liga outfit runs until 2021. However, a move to the Premier League could be tempting for the 25-year-old which could pave the way for his exit from Spain.
The Cherries have mostly used Charlie Daniels down the left side of defence and the 31-year-old has been impressive. However, a fullback’s role is one of the most hardworking ones as the player is expected to make overlapping runs and cover his defence at the same time when needed. Daniels missed just 3 games in the Premier League but the club lacks a good backup option for him.

The Cherries are also being linked with Germany’s left-back Marvin Plattenhardt and it remains to be seen which option Eddie Howe will go after. The German is currently one of the hottest properties in European football so quite a few clubs are after him. It might be that Howe misses out on signing him. However, Rico seems to be a decent candidate who will certainly bring depth to the squad and add competition for places.
