Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is likely to go down the pecking order after Brendan Rodgers went on to complete the signing of Odsonne Edouard. The Paris Saint Germain striker was on loan last season and the former Liverpool boss seems to be happy with what he has to offer as he made a permanent move for him in the transfer market.
Many considered that move as the end of the road for striker Leigh Griffiths as it is likely that Edouard and Moussa Dembele will start ahead of him. However, the player and manager recently gave an interview which suggests that Griffiths is set to stay with the Hoops for a considerable amount of time.
The player recently replied on twitter when a fan questioned about his future and he affirmed that he isn’t leaving Celtic Park at this point in time. The manager had also earlier commented,” Leigh is a very important player for our squad when he is fit and available. You can’t go through the season, playing the games we play with just 11. It really is a squad game and Leigh is a very important part of it.”
The 27-year-old is already contracted to stay at the club until 2021 and if the words of the player are to be believed then the Hoops are going to renew his contract further. He said,”85 per cent done (Work on the new contract). A couple of tweaks are needed and then it will be done. I see my best years at Celtic. I’d like to get to 100 goals. If I don’t get there next season I may as well quit football (He is currently 2 short of that mark).”
”The new contract won’t be a weight off my mind. I’ve got two and a bit years on my current deal, but the fact they are even talking about a new contract gives me joy and delight that I am going to be here for, basically, the rest of my career. When it does get done and signed I will be delighted.”- he further added.
Griffiths has been an important player at Celtic Park since he joined from Wolves in 2014. Last season he might not have been as prolific as Dembele but he still contributed with 13 goals and 8 assists.

He still has a lot more to offer and doesn’t seem to complain about limited game time that he has been getting since the emergence of Dembele and Edouard. Having an experienced striker like him will certainly help the squad and it is a step in the right direction for Brendan Rodgers to keep hold of the Scotsman.
