According to latest reports Celtic might just have dropped out on the race for Liverpool youngster, Harry Wilson. The Reds are not willing to let go of the 21-year-old without the guarantee of regular playing time. In order to ensure Wilson’s consistent senior team involvement, the Jurgen Klopp management is prepared to charge Celtic or any of the interested parties a fine if he does not register the allotted minutes on the pitch.
This has thrown Brendan Rodgers back who was eagerly waiting to receive Wilson on a season-long agreement. Unfortunately, the Hoops boss cannot guarantee his players time of the pitch as seen from the previous season’s Charly Musonda incident.
The Belgian had made his way over to Celtic Park on an 18-month loan agreement but the loan ended prematurely at the end of the season and Musonda went back to Chelsea after he appeared just 8 times for the Hoops. The deal was cut short and the winger was sent back to Chelsea after the completion of the 2017/18 season.
Does this mean that Rangers have an open shot at the Wrexham-born player? Rangers are certainly interested in the player. Steven Gerrard has already brought in Ovie Ejaria for the upcoming season and has been making use of his Liverpool connection to give youngsters an escape.
The former England and Reds captain has been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old who impressed aplenty with his performances for Hull City last term. Wilson hit a prolific run of form to help the Tigers battle their way out of relegation in the EFL Championship. He entered KCOM in January and scored 7 goals in 13 league appearances for City. He also set up 4 assists thus attracting the attention of a dozen Championship outfits.
Wilson’s previous loan spell with Crewe Alexander did not prove to be as lucrative as this one with just 7 appearances in his 4 months with the League One outfit. The 4-time Welsh international who also has 15 caps for his country’s U17, U19 and U21 sides, has really come into his own within the spectrum of English football and could someday hold a prominent spot in the Liverpool first team.
However, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane already in the squad, the Reds academy product might have to wait on his starting XI call-up. Rangers, on the other hand, can offer him a bigger platform to prove his worth.
