Rangers fans should have a concerned look on their faces as latest reports confirm Fenerbahce’s ambitious efforts to sign their prolific centre-forward, Alfredo Morelos. As per reports, the Turkish outfit’s footballing director, Damien Comolli has already travelled to Glasgow to begin negotiations with the Gers hierarchy, beating out their close rivals, Besiktas in the race.
It has only been months since speculations over a China move died down and now the 22-year-old is already being heavily monitored by other European sides. Tying down Morelos for the upcoming season might just be Steven Gerrard’s greatest challenge as the new head coach of Rangers.
The former England captain took over the reign at the Ibrox and has already improved the squad with 7 key signings. He is due to receive Umar Sadiq from AS Roma on a loan deal with the player’s work permit still pending.
It is to our understanding that the Nigerian forward is being brought in to serve as a partner to Morelos in the attacking lineup and not as a sole central forward. With Jason Cummings returning to Nottingham Forest, Kevin Miller relieved of his duties and Eduardo Herrera told to find a new club, Sadiq will be heavily relied upon to share Morelos’ workload up front.
Morelos is a key figure at the Ibrox after finishing the 2017/18 campaign with 18 goals and thus registering himself as the Scottish Premiership’s highest scorer. He made the switch from Helsinki last summer and has been an immediate hit with the Light Blues.
To prevent him from leaving for a healthier paycheque, Rangers tied him up on a new deal last December which is set to run until the summer of 2021. The Colombian has a total of 10 caps to his name for his country’s U17 and U20 sides.
He is an ambitious head who wants to make a name for himself in the European top-flight. Standing at 5 feet 9 inches tall, Morelos is a shifty figure in attack with a keen eye for goal. The 22-year-old is surely set for bigger things in the future but for now, he should prove his worth with the Scottish outfit.
Gerrard has been tasked with returning the Gers to title-winning ways, which will be a challenge even with the current set of players. Beating Celtic to major domestic honours will not be an easy job and it will require the very best of both the manager and the players.
The 38-year-old head coach should be quick to knock away any offers from Fenerbahce or any other interested outfits. At this point, the Scottish club cannot afford to lose their best attacker.
