Manchester United have officially tabled a bid which has been declined by AC Milan for their centre-back Alessio Romagnoli this summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils have seen their offer declined by the Serie A giants for the Italian defender. This latest development will be a big blow for United as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
Some sources have recently claimed that Jose Mourinho’s side has made an initial bid of €50m for the AC Milan sensation but were told to increase their offer if they are serious about acquiring his services this summer. It has also been suggested that the Italian club are willing to part ways with their prized asset in this post-season but are demanding a fee in excess of €50m.
Gennaro Gattuso’s team would ‘seriously consider’ a second bid for the player if United decided to match their undisclosed valuation. The 23-year-old had put in a number of outstanding performances at the heart of the Milan defence during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.
Romagnoli had featured in 42 matches for the Serie A side last season and has 3 goals and one assist to his name in all competitions. He has also earned 7 international caps for the Italian national team so far in his career.
The Reds of Manchester had an underwhelming campaign without any trophies last season when they only managed to attain a second-placed finish which was overshadowed by their rivals, Manchester City‘s dominance at the top of the Premier League. A player of Romagnoli’s quality will give Mourinho’s squad a huge boost and it might help them close the gap to the Citizens next term.
The addition of Romagnoli would have undoubtedly bolstered Mourinho’s defensive options at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have an array of talented centre-backs such as Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo vying for a place in Mourinho’s backline. The potential acquisition of a top-class centre-back like Romagnoli will definitely improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the United squad.

The Italian international is quite versatile and primarily operates as a centre-back but can also play in the left-back position which makes him a great fit for Mourinho’s team. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Romagnoli and whether he ends up making a switch to Old Trafford before the start of the new campaign.
