Atletico Madrid are interested in securing the signature of the Portuguese winger Gelson Martins this summer amidst speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool. According to recent reports, the Portuguese international is on the La Liga club’s radar ahead of a potential move during this summer transfer window.
The Sporting Cp wide man is all set to terminate his contract with the Portuguese giants following an altercation with the club’s supporters before a cup final match last season. His agent has also confirmed that he won’t move to Benfica but will look to seal a move away from Estádio José Alvalade this summer.
The 23-year-old had put in a number of match-winning performances for Sporting during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs. Some sources are now claiming that he will soon become a free agent which will be a massive boost for any of his potential suitors. One of the clubs being linked with the Portuguese talent is Liverpool who are looking to add some quality to their squad before the start of the new season.
However, the recent development of Atletico Madrid joining the race will make it hard for the Reds to convince the player. The Spanish outfit has a knack for acquiring players on the cheap which could mean that the Reds would have to look for an alternative if they plan to sign a wide player this summer.
The Merseysiders managed to attain a 4th placed finish in the English top tier last season. Jurgen Klopp is now looking to land some quality talents this summer in order to boost his squad and challenge for some major silverware in the upcoming campaign.
The addition of Martins would have definitely bolstered Klopp’s attacking options at Anfield. Liverpool possesses some quality wide men in their ranks such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who are all competing for a place in Klopp’s starting XI. The potential acquisition of Martins will undoubtedly increase their squad depth significantly and add more competition for places within the Reds team.

At 23, the Portuguese playmaker still has his best years ahead of him which the Premier League big boys could look to benefit from, in the next few years. Martins is also very versatile and primarily plays on the right wing but can also be deployed as a secondary striker up top which makes him a perfect fit for Klopp’s Liverpool. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Martins and whether the Merseyside giants can convince him to ply his trade at Anfield next term.
