Newcastle United are expected to be one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market this summer. Rafa Benitez did really well to help the side break into the top half of the points table last season, but is now in desperate need of some addition to his first team, to try and take the next step, in the upcoming campaign.
They continue to be linked with a number of exciting stars from around the country and one name now doing the rounds is Andros Townsend.
The 26-year old started his senior career with Tottenham Hotspur but failed to establish himself at White Hart Lane, spending nine stints on loan at different clubs in the country. He made just 50 league appearances for Spurs, before joining Newcastle United in January 2016, three years after he broke into the English national side.
However, his four goals that season failed to keep the Magpies in the top flight, as Townsend decided to stay back in the Premier League, earning a move to Crystal Palace that summer. He was one of the most consistent players for the Eagles in these two years, picking up two goals and seven assists in 35 league starts last season.
He was used in various roles by Roy Hodgson, showing his versatility and at just 26, he is yet to hit his peak as a footballer and will be a decent coup for Rafa.
The Spaniard used Townsend extensively after he took over St James’ Park in 2016. He was happy to let him leave after the Magpies were relegated but reports now suggest that the manager is ready to make a move for the winger this summer.
However, it is understood that the 26-year old is only viewed as a contingency plan to Matt Ritchie, who is wanted elsewhere in England. It is reported that Championship outfit Stoke City are ready to pay up to £15m for Ritchie, giving Rafa something to think about.
It is reported that the Newcastle United wants to retain Ritchie, who joined the club after Townsend left in 2016. However, the price the Potters are willing to pay, will give Rafa a chance to spend on other areas of the squad.

The former Bournemouth man was crucial to Rafa’s plans last season, registering three goals and five assists in 32 league starts. Townsend can easily replicate those numbers and is a decent replacement for Ritchie.
