Arsenal goalkeeper, Petr Cech has struck away transfer rumours by revealing his future intentions with the club. Speaking to journalists at his home nation of Czech Republic, the 36-year-old said, “My contract with Arsenal still has a year to run. The only thing I’m preparing for is the fight for the No.1 spot in goal. Napoli were interested but my future is at Arsenal. I didn’t think of changing clubs.”
This obviously is a huge boost for the Arsenal faithful who were already on cloud nine to see Bernd Leno arrive at the Emirates on a £19m transfer. The 26-year-old is touted be Unai Emery’s number one choice for the upcoming season but Leno should be wise to not get complacent.
A proven Premier League veteran will be targeting for his spot in the Gunners lineup and he is just about to enter a completely new territory of English football. Having spent the past 7 years with Bayer Leverkusen and his entire career in Germany, the Leno is expected to be faced with a few obstacles at his new home.
Arsenal are one of the elite clubs of Europe and are looking to make their way back into the Champions League. That will demand the very best out of Leno on a regular basis, something Petr Cech could not guarantee this past term.
The one incident that stands out the most from the Czech Republic international’s previous season is the mishit from the Swansea City game. The Gunners fell victim to an uncharacteristic error from their number one goalkeeper in the 3-1 loss against the Swans.
The 35-year-old’s failed clearance attempt allowed Jordan Ayew to slot in an easy goal on the hour mark and give the opposition the side the lead and the momentum to snatch three crucial points away from them.
Despite the occasional slip up here and there, Cech has always been a reliable figure at the back and a leader without the captain’s armband.
It might be fair to assume that his age is starting to catch up to him and that is completely understandable after the legendary career he has enjoyed in the Premier League (14 years, 4 league titles, 5 FA Cups, 1 Champions League and 1 Europa League).

With the 36-year-old firmly establishing himself as a prominent figure in the club, David Ospina might no longer have a place in the Arsenal ranks.
