Former Premier League Champions Chelsea may have won the FA Cup late last season, but that does not mask the lack of progress at the club in the last domestic campaign. They failed to qualify for the Champions League next season and are now struggling to land Maurizio Sarri as a replacement for Antonio Conte this summer.
It is widely reported that the former Napoli boss will take charge of the club sooner rather than later, which has not stopped the club from scouting for potential transfer targets. One such player that continues to be on their radar is Leonardo Bonucci.
Born and brought up in Viterbo, Italy, the 31-year old has played for six different Italian clubs in his time in the country. But he truly established himself as a star player in Serie A after he joined Turin giants Juventus, back in 2010.
He was the first choice defender for the club from his debut season and was crucial in Juventus lifting six league titles before he decided to quit the club last summer. He was a part of the Serie A team of the season for three consecutive campaigns before leaving Turin and was also named in the Champions League team of the season in his final season.
He is easily one of the most decorated and experienced defenders in the game at the moment but has struggled to find consistency with his new club, AC Milan.
He started 35 games and scored two goals for the side, helping them to a place in the Europa League but the European ban on Milan, who failed to live up to the FFP rules, will now see them lose their star players, Bonucci included.
Reports suggest that Manchester City, Chelsea and PSG are interested in the services of the Italian skipper, who could be available on the cheap. He will want to play European football regularly and has not more than three years at the top of his game.
So both English giants will be attractive destinations for the 31-year old, but Chelsea are in more need of him than Pep Guardiola’s side. The Blues are not totally convinced with the options at the back, as both Gary Cahill and David Luiz do not seem to be first team options next season.
Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger remain the only natural centre-backs in the side at the moment and the experience of Bonucci and his winning mentality will be a welcome addition to the squad at Stamford Bridge.

He is easily one of the best players available in the transfer market in his role and is certainly a player Chelsea should look to sign this summer.
