Wayne Rooney, England’s legendary striker and top scorer, has finally confirmed his departure from Premier League club Everton. The 32-year-old forward has penned down a deal at MLS side DC United, which will see him plying his trade at the new Audi Field Stadium for the next three and a half year.
Though the deal doesn’t involve any transfer fee, it is reported that the American outfit will be paying Everton an amount as a compensation package. The Englishman, whose current worth is £10m, is going to be the highest paid player in the history of DC United.
Rooney will make his debut at the newly constructed stadium on 14th July 2018 and the move will be made official on the 10th of July when the mid-season transfer window opens in the MLS.
The player looked very positive about the move that takes him away from England. He said, “Moving to America and MLS fulfils another career ambition for me,” Rooney added, “I have the hunger to be a success here and will give DC 100% – as I have always done for every team I have ever played for. Now I can’t wait to get on the pitch in a United shirt and join my new teammates to bring success to this club.”
Known for his brilliant goal-scoring skills and ability to play out 90 minutes with the same level of stamina throughout the match, the 32-year-old burst onto the Premier League stage when he scored a spectacular goal against Arsenal as an 18-year-old. The arrival of a future English legend was announced on that very day and Manchester United brought him into Old Trafford in 2004.
Under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney’s career started to flourish and he was soon involved in winning titles at the Theatre of Dreams. He went onto appear in 559 matches for the Red Devils scoring a club record tally of 253 goals apart from 146 assists throughout his illustrious career at Manchester United.
In the last few seasons, however, he had fallen down the pecking order at the Manchester club, which saw him making a move back to his childhood club, Everton in the last term. He made 40 overall appearances for the Merseyside club in the 2017/18 season, in which he scored 11 goals to establish himself as the top scorer for his club, in a season which was absolutely abysmal for the Toffees.
However, his antics were far from satisfactory for the club to offer him a contract extension and the English legend had to make a way out of Goodison Park. Understandably, he is at the fag end of his career, having already announced his international retirement in the last season and we all at T4O would like to wish Wayne Rooney all the best for the rest of his football career and would hope that he will someday return to the Merseyside with a new responsibility laden on his shoulders.
