Manchester City are plotting a move to bring back Huddersfield Town midfielder Aaron Mooy back to the Etihad Stadium. According to recent reports, the Citizens are pondering on whether to activate the buy-back clause in the Australian international’s contract ahead of the new season.
It is understood that City are looking to re-sign their former player after his impressive spell at the John Smith’s Stadium over the last two campaigns. Mooy joined the Manchester outfit from their sister club Melbourne City in the summer of 2016. However, he failed to make a single appearance for their senior squad before being loaned out to the Terries for the 2016-17 campaign. The Aussie star helped David Wagner’s side win a promotion back to the English top-flight which was enough to earn him a permanent move to West Yorkshire.
City sold their prized asset in a deal which could rise to £10m last summer but the Manchester club also included a £20m buy-back option in his contract. The 27-year-old had a terrific campaign last season and was one of Huddersfield’s standout players. His contributions helped the Terriers avoid the drop which has not gone unnoticed by his former club. Some sources are now claiming that Pep Guardiola’s side are eager to activate the buy-back clause following his eye-catching displays for Australia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Terriers are eager to retain the services of the Australian international but they would be left powerless if the Blues of Manchester decided to match the £20m buy-back clause. Guardiola is on the lookout for some fresh faces in this ongoing transfer window so that he has a good enough squad capable of retaining their Premier League crown.
The potential acquisition of Mooy will undoubtedly bolster Guardiola’s midfield options at the Etihad Stadium. City have a luxury of midfield superstars in their ranks such as Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, İlkay Gündoğan, Phil Foden and Fabian Delph who are all vying for a place in their starting XI. The addition of Mooy will increase competition for places and give Guardiola’s squad a huge boost going into the new campaign.

At 27, the Aussie talent still has best years ahead of him which the Citizens could look to benefit from, in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Mooy and whether he ends up plying his trade at Manchester before the start of the new season.
