Tottenham Hotspur could reignite their interest on Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic this summer. According to recent reports, Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs is being touted to make an offer for the Croatian international during this summer transfer period. It is believed that the Argentine manager is eager to strengthen his options at North London and Kovacic fits the bill perfectly.
Los Blancos have reportedly stated that the Croatian international wants to depart the Spanish capital this summer which has alerted a number of clubs including Spurs. The 24-year-old has been subject to limited first-team opportunities last season and only made 21 appearances for the Galacticos in the league. Some sources are now claiming that Kovacic is frustrated with the lack of game time at Madrid and wants to move on to greener pastures.
Tottenham have been heavily linked with the Croatian midfielder in the past and his recent revelation could be a big boost to their efforts of landing the player in the near future. In a recent interview, Kovacic addressed his future and was quoted to have said, “I want to play more and the best thing is for me to leave Madrid,”
“I love football and being on the grass, I want the opportunity to be a starter on another team, if I do not play … I’m not happy.”
It is understood that the Galacticos star has a £44m release clause in his current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium which shouldn’t be a major stumbling block for Spurs.
Pochettino’s team managed to clinch a third-place finish in the league but it was another season without any major trophies for the Tottenham faithful. The Argentine manager needs to acquire some top-class talent in the summer window so that his team can mount a realistic title challenge in the upcoming campaign.
The potential addition of Kovacic will definitely bolster Pochettino’s midfield options ahead of the new season. The North Londoners have some top quality midfielders in their ranks such as Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier, Christian Eriksen, Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks who are all competing for a midfield spot at White Hart Lane. The acquisition of Kovacic will improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within Pochettino’s squad.
