West Bromwich Albion are plotting a surprise move for Red Star Belgrade goalkeeper Milan Borjan this summer. According to recent reports, the Baggies are interested in securing the signature of the Canadian international during this summer transfer period. However, they are not the only ones looking to recruit him with Swansea City and Bristol City also keeping tabs on his progress at Belgrade.
The Canadian keeper has found success during his football career and has won a total of three titles with two different clubs since making his professional debut back in 2008. He is also quite experienced and knows what it takes to play at the highest level. Borjan played for Ludogorets in the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League campaign and was the first Canadian to take part in Europe’s elite competition since Lars Hirschfeld for Rosenborg in 2007.
Borjan had made 46 appearances for Red Star last season, conceding 22 goals while keeping 26 clean sheets across all competitions. He is quite unknown and is still unproven in English football which makes it a gamble for the Baggies. However, he might be a gamble worth taking as West Brom look to bounce back and secure a promotion spot at the end of the following campaign.
The West Midlands outfit had a season to forget as they suffered the agony of being relegated to the Skybet Championship last season. They will now look to recruit wisely in this ongoing window so that their squad is capable enough to compete for a promotion place next year. However, it won’t be an easy task with good players being sold at a premium in the current market.
The addition of Borjan will undoubtedly bolster the Baggies’ goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign. West Brom have the likes of Ben Foster, Alex Palmer and Boaz Myhill vying for a place in goal at the Hawthorns. The potential signing of Borjan will definitely add more competition for places within their squad and improve their team significantly going into the new season.

At 30, Borjan still has a few years left in him to play at a high level which the West Midlands side could look to capitalise on, in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Canadian goalie and whether he ends up making a switch to the Hawthorns in the next few weeks.
