AS.com reported on Jordi Alba’s supposed interest in quitting Barcelona for Tottenham Hotspur this summer, just after the conclusion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. According to their claims, the 29-year-old feels unsettled at the side and is looking for an escape.
However, Following reports confirmed that Alba has no wish to leave Camp Nou anytime soon. When asked about the rumoured move, the fullback said, “No, no, I’m very good at Barca. If it were up to me, I would stay at Barcelona all my life. But it does not depend on me but on what the club wants. It also depends on my performance, which this season has been very good, but I do not see myself outside of Barcelona.”
The entire theory might just have been a hoax in the first place especially with the player still tied to the club for another two seasons. Not only is he a cemented starter in the Blaugrana first team, he is also one of the world’s best left-backs.
Alba delivered with 12 assists this past season and has 41 in his 246 appearances for Barcelona. He almost has a telepathic understanding with Lionel Messi on the left-flank and always looks to make those defence-breaking runs to complete the Barca attacks.
Lucas Digne, who serves as an understudy to the Spaniard, has similar traits but is nowhere close to the talents that Alba possesses. The 29-year-old is also a better fit into the Barca system due to his youth level-association with the club.
Alba was trained within the walls of the prestigious La Masia academy but at some point was released due to his small stature. He proved his worth with Cornella by helping them earn promotion to the Tercera division in the 2005/06 season and later with Valencia.
Alba was brought back to the Camp Nou for €14m in the summer 2012 and ever since has been a perfect fit into the club’s system. He has helped the side to 4 La Liga and Copa del Rey trophies and the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League. He was also voted into the FIFPro World XI 4 times and 2012 UEFA Euro Team Of The Tournament.
Tottenham Hotspur might be in the market for quality additions but they are not in the same vicinity as Barcelona in terms of what they can offer Alba. Mauricio Pochettino has transformed the team into serious title-contenders but is yet to secure a winner’s medal.
