Sevilla are plotting a sensational move for Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino this summer. According to recent reports, the Magpies youngster is being tipped to make a move out of Tyneside in the summer with the La Liga outfit lining up an offer for him during this transfer period.
However, they are not the only ones looking to recruit the Spanish Under-21 international with Real Sociedad, who have already tabled a £10m offer for the talented midfielder, Real Betis and Athletic Bilbao all keen admirers of his talents. Some sources are now claiming that Pablo Machín’s side has reached out to the player about a potential return back to the Spanish football in this off-season.
Merino had a terrific campaign at St. James’ Park last term and put in a few outstanding performances at the heart of Rafael Benitez’s midfield. The Spaniard made 25 appearances for the Magpies last season, scoring one goal while grabbing one assist in all competitions.
He is extremely versatile and can play in a number of different positions across the pitch. The 22-year-old primarily plays as a defensive midfielder at the centre of the park but can also be deployed as a centre-back which makes him a perfect fit for any of his potential suitors.
Merino has been subject to limited first-team opportunities in the second half of the last campaign. It is believed that the Magpies are looking for an offer in excess of £10m if they are to part ways with their prized asset this summer.
Retaining some of their top stars could go a long way in helping Newcastle improve on their league position next term. However, Benitez has not been reliant on Merino’s talents since the turn of the year which could pave the way for the player to make a switch out of England.
The addition of the 22-year-old will undoubtedly bolster Machin’s midfield options at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium ahead of the new season. He is exactly the kind of talent who can flourish with a change of scenery in the near future and a move back to his home country may be the best option for all parties.

The Tyneside club should look to use the money generated from his potential sale to bring in a suitable replacement or strengthen other areas of this squad. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Merino and whether he ends up switching clubs this summer.
