Everton are considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen left-back, Wendell as a potential long-term replacement for Leighton Baines. The latter is 33 now and is in the twilight of his playing career. The Toffees need a successor as they plot to make a run for one of the European qualification spots next term.
Wendell seems like as good a candidate as any to take over a full-time role at the Goodison Park in the near future. The Brazilian is one of the best left-backs in the Bundesliga and has close to 150 games under his belt for Leverkusen.
He made 30 appearances last term and was directly involved in 6 goals to see Leverkusen to the 5th spot of the German top-flight. At 24, he still has the potential to one day feature for his national side and the move to the Premier League seems like the right step forward in his playing career.
Wendell is one of the attack-minded forwards with the blistering pace under his wings and a striking left-foot to go along with it. With 12 caps in total for Brazil’s U20 and U23 sides, the fullback will understandably be handed over a prominent role by Marco Silva, if he makes the switch this summer.
Everton managed to climb up the table from the relegation scraps the last term but faced a real issue in the left-back position. When Baines went down to injury, Sam Allardyce chose to field Rhu-Endly Cuco Martina in the position as a makeshift option.
With a dominant left foot, the latter looked uncomfortable going forward and somehow could not meet the required standards. Now, the newly appointed boss will be looking to set off on the 2018/19 campaign with all his starting positions well covered.
Farhad Moshiri has agreed to fund the transfer of big names even after facing a disappointing season in the top-flight. If it were not for Allardyce’s expertise and some of the club’s players stepping up to the occasions, we might just have witnessed one of the most expensive failures in world football.
Wendell started out his career in his home country with teams like Iraty, Londrina and Gremio. He has accumulated a ton of experience in the European top-flight including minutes in the Champions League.

With his contract set to run for another 3 seasons with Leverkusen, Wendell might come with a decent price tag. That should hardly faze the Merseyside club who last spent around £200m in 2017 summer transfer window.
