Spanish news outlet, El Desmarques, is reporting about an ongoing three-way battle between Celtic, Lazio and Hannover 96 for Deportivo La Coruna defender, Fabian Schar. The 26-year-old signed with the Spanish outfit last summer but had a release clause worth £3.5m.
After last season’s 18th place finish in the La Liga, the Turks might now be forced to let go of their centre-back for the same amount they acquired him for last season. Schar is impressing for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, by shielding the Switzerland backline against the exploits of Gabriel Jesus and Neymar.
The 6 feet 2-inch figure moved to Spain on a 4-year contract, after spending two seasons with TSG Hoffenheim and making 32 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit. Schar is a product of the FC Wil 1900 youth academy where he made 52 appearances and scored 9 times for the club’s senior side. In 2012 he moved to FC Basel on a 3-year deal and went to play in 115 games and netted 15 goals for the RotBlau.
The player is a resolute figure in defence and has proven to be key for his national side. The 26-year-old has already been capped 40 times for the Switzerland senior squad during which he registered 7 goals. The defender has the potential to make it into a title-winning squad and Celtic seems like the perfect escape. The Hoops are coming off their second consecutive domestic treble and are in search of defensive reinforcements.
Dedryck Boyata, who has started under Brendan Rodgers last term and is currently representing Belgium in the World Cup, is wanted by a number of European outfits with only 12 more months left in his current contract.
Marvin Compper has been mostly ineffective since his switch in January and Jozo Simunovic has faced his struggles with injury. Rodgers has put faith in Jack Hendry previously but the youngster still needs to undergo further development. That leaves the Bhoys in a tough spot ahead of the 2018/19 campaign with just one signing made so far. Schar could plug the gaps and will also be available within Celtic’s price range.

Rodgers ideally would like to continue dominating the domestic campaign for the coming years while also placing a significant challenge in the European stage. With the players he has gathered over the past two seasons, Schar could be the perfect addition to tie it all into place.
