What a season it has turned out to be for West Ham United so far! When big things were expected of them after a superb last season, the Hammers have been a big letdown. With their 3-0 loss to Southampton on Sunday, the Hammers have won just one of their six Premier League games this season. Slaven Bilic is a man under a gargantuan pressure right now.
West Ham have been underperforming from the very start of the season and the injury crisis they have experienced this season has not made the task any easier for the manager Slaven Bilic. One position that has been haunting the Hammers is that of a left-back. The East London club lost first-choice left-back Aaron Cresswell to a long-term knee injury following a challenge suffered in a pre-season friendly against Karlsruher in July.
With no first-team stand in, West Ham utilised the summer transfer window to bring in Arthur Masuaku from Olympiakos but the Frenchman also went down with a knee injury against Accrington Stanley and has been ruled out for at least six weeks after a poor start to his West Ham career. Now in a serious crisis, West Ham are looking for free-agent Kevin Constant to bail them out from the situation as per reports from The Mirror.
29-year-old Constant is a free agent now having been released by Serie A side Bologna in the summer and has been training with Ligue 1 side OGC Nice to maintain fitness levels while he looks for a club. The Frenchman, who represents Guinea at the international level, does possess plenty of experience at the highest level with 105 Serie A games on his resume.
After his breakthrough from the academy of Toulouse, the Frenchman was snapped up by Chateauroux in 2008 and after doing a good job for the then Ligue 2 side, Serie A side Chievo came calling for him. The 29-year-old had embarked on a run in Italian football after that and graced the pitch for sides like Genoa, AC Milan and Bologna.
Primarily a left-back, Constant is versatile enough to ply his trade in a range of midfield positions. With a frame of 6 ft 1⁄2 in, the 25-capped Guinea international is a strong customer and cannot be easily knocked off the ball. The 29-year-old has bags of pace in his locker. Having spent so many years in Italy, Constant is pretty solid defensively.
Kevin Constant is easily a player who can fill in as a stop-gap on the left side of West Ham defence. The Hammers have been leaking sloppy goals this season and the 29-year-old could solve that problem with his experience.
