Leeds United, once famous English top tier side, witnessed massive downfall in past decade and the administrative oversight transformed the Whites into a mere Championship mid-table outfit. Although a sudden upsurge under Garry Monk excited the fans, his stepping down, however, brought Leeds back where they used to be prior to his appointment. They saw a couple of new managers and an array of new signings the last term, but there was little to cheer about as the Peacocks completely lost their way despite a bright start.
Meanwhile, the appointment of iconic ex-Argentina and Chile chief Marcelo Bielsa has handed the dejected supporters enough reasons to be hopeful of a long-awaited Premier League return and a reported £20m transfer warchest is likely to reconfigure their underwhelming squad. Several exits are on the cards at Elland Road and Felix Wiedwald, their 28-year-old German custodian, is close to putting an end to his miserable spell in West Yorkshire.
Wiedwald was one of their high-profile summer recruits with a regular first-team action for Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen and replaced veteran Robert Green in goal – a popular Englishman at Elland Road for his notable contribution the season before.
The 6 ft 3 in former Germany youth international had a solid start in new surroundings where he made a major contribution in Leeds’ stunning inception of the 2017-18 campaign. But the team lost the plot a few weeks later and Wiedwald, who was repetitive in making errors, received stern criticism from the fans as well as experts. Andy Lonergan, his deputy, was soon promoted as the new ‘number 1’ but failed to secure a first-team slot due to similar howlers.
Wiedwald conceded 33 times in 28 league outings and saw himself snubbed from the matchday squad under ex-boss Paul Heckingbottom who preferred academy prodigy Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Peacocks goal towards the closure of a disappointing season.
