Tottenham Hotspur have made their first signing of the 2018 summer window in Boca Juniors midfielder, Wilmar Barrios. A deal has been struck between two sides which will see the 24-year-old make his way over to London after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Barrios is currently at Russia ready to serve his national side for the 11th time. Mauricio Pochettino rates him highly and has understandably brought him in as a replacement for Moussa Dembele. The latter continues to get linked with a move out of White Hart Lane with Inter Milan currently heading that race.
The fans expected the rumours to be just another unsettlement issue which would be resolved by the end of the 2017/18 season. However, unlike his manager, who has signed a new long-term contract, Dembele still remains hopeful of quitting Spurs this offseason.
Now that Barrios has come in, the Tottenham faithful can rest easy going into the 2018/19 season, although they will wish to keep the veteran in the side as well.
Tottenham have been transformed over the past 4 seasons into one of the top Premier League clubs, capable of winning the title. They managed to grab the last spot in next season’s Champions League by beating Chelsea and Arsenal.
However, Pochettino has win silverware with the club and making all the necessary signings is the right way forward. Tottenham’s only missing component in the recent past has been their squad depth which often turns out to be the difference maker for title-winning sides.
Victor Wanyama has faced his fair share of struggles this past season due to his time away from the pitch with an injury. Eric Dier has cemented his starting birth next to the Belgian in the holding midfield role and Wanyama is mostly considered as a backup.
Pochettino also has Harry Winks in the side along with Mousa Sissoko, who he can deploy as a makeshift option almost anywhere on the pitch. Dembele is his best outfield player to hold down the anchor position and at the same time make contributions on the offensive end.
Barrios somehow resembles the 30-year-old’s talents and also has the technical prowess to formulate plays of his own. He has enjoyed a breakout season with Boca Juniors, having appeared in 27 games and scoring once.

The 24-year-old knows how to hold down the fort from the central locations and is calm with possession. Hopefully, he will able to quickly set himself in the Premier League to help Spurs make a title run in the coming years.
