Newcastle United are interested in bringing Swansea City flop Roque Mesa to St. James’ Park. The midfielder was brought in the summer last year and was sent out on loan in the second half of the season. He played for Sevilla where he made seven appearances for them. The central midfielder is also wanted by new Premier League entrants Fulham and it is highly likely that the Swans will part ways with him after they dropped to the second division.
Swansea City signed him for £11m and he failed to provide a spark in the midfield for his side. He made just 11 appearances in the Premier League before he was deemed not good enough and was sent away on loan to Sevilla. However, the Spanish club seems satisfied with what the 29-year-old has to offer and are willing to trigger the buyout option they had in his loan deal. Though the entry of the Tyneside club has certainly made the race more intriguing and it remains to be seen whether they will be able to sign the player.
His agent though has given an indication that the Spanish side are favourites to sign him. He said,”There is someone in the Premier (League) who knows him well. There are European coaches, from Serbia, who know what they can give. Roque only wants to hear about Sevilla. Already decided. Sevilla has also told us that he wants us to stay and we are here. When two love each other there are no problems.”
The Magpies will be looking to add depth to their squad after they finished in the top half of the table. Mesa will fit into the central midfielder role and Rafael Benitez might end up partnering him with Jonjo Shelvey in the middle of the park. The Toons are likely to sell Mikel Merino and that will reduce Benitez’s options in the middle of the park. Mesa can play in the deep-lying playmaker role for the Toons.
It is clear that the Spanish tactician has identified a midfielder as a priority in the transfer market. However, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to land Mesa as his agent has indicated that the Spaniard is close to moving to Sevilla.

Mesa failed to cut the mustard while he was at the Liberty Stadium and it looks highly unlikely that he has the game to succeed in English football and maybe it’s a blessing in disguise for Newcastle that the midfielder is close to signing with Sevilla.
