After a season without any silverware to show for, Manchester United are now expected to be busy in the summer transfer window, adding quality to their first team. But Jose Mourinho has not been able to land his top transfer targets and though has made a couple of signings, is still in the transfer market, looking to improve on more than one position in the squad.
One such player they are desperate for is Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian contract rebel has a release clause in his contract of just £25m that activates next season but Tottenham Hotspur are now demanding a price close to £70m to let him leave this summer. Reports suggest that at this price, Alderweireld does not fit into Mourinho’s profile, who is now forced to look elsewhere. So who can Manchester United sign this summer?
Clement Lenglet (Sevilla):
The French youngster put on some consistent performances for the Spanish outfit last season, including two superb outings against Manchester United, that knocked them out of Europe. He has been a transfer target for Barcelona for a while now but Manchester United and Chelsea are also showing interest. At just 22, he does not have too much experience in Europe but has great potential and is a certain upgrade on the options at Old Trafford at the moment.
Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid):
The 23-year old Uruguayan international is struggling for game time at Atletico Madrid and has been extensively linked with an exit since the start of the last transfer window. His current contract with the club runs till 2020, so he will be a bit expensive but he is easily one of the best defenders in La Liga and also in Europe and could be a game changer for Manchester United. He may not be an established star but certainly fits the profile of what Mourinho needs for his side.
Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich):
The German international is one of the first names on the team sheet for club and country at the moment and at 29, stands as one of the most experienced CBs in Europe at the moment. He has been at Bayern for over three years now, winning almost everything possible but reports now claim that he could be closing in on an exit this summer. Arsenal, Juventus and AS Roma have already shown interest in his signature and there is no reason why Manchester United should not look to sign him this summer.
