In their bid to take the final step towards winning something meaningful, Tottenham Hotspur will look to bring in reinforcements to their squad in the summer. They are currently being linked to Aston Villa‘s attacking midfielder Jack Grealish who had a good season at Villa Park as they came perilously close to winning the playoff finals.
It is no secret that the Villans are under financial turmoil as they had a lot set on winning the playoff finals. After their defeat, everything seems to be falling apart even off the pitch. They have been ushered a winding-up order from HMRC following a late tax bill worth up to £5m.
According to reports, Mauricio Pochettino has identified the Englishman as his prime target and Spurs wants to move in quickly given Villa’s money problems. It is very likely that the Championship club will have to cash him in summer to solve some of their off-field issues.
Aston Villa are insisting that they will not let their star academy product leave for anything under £40m and Daniel Levy believes that he can sign Grealish for as little as £15m. Given the current situation at Villa Park, they don’t have the bargaining power and they might have to sell him for far less than the £40m they expect to get by selling him.
Grealish has gone on to represent England at various youth level and is touted to be a future England international. He has all the facets to be a good no 10 for the Three Lions in the future and for that, he might just have to move to a Premier League outfit. He managed 3 goals and six assists in the Championship this season and was one of the most important players for Villa last season.
Tottenham currently have a host of talents at their disposal as they have the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Moussa Sissoko who can play the creative role in midfield. It is very likely that Grealish will have to bide his time on the bench before he gets anywhere close to first-team football.
Grealish has been an Aston Villa fan since his childhood and has graduated through their academy, so seeing him leave will certainly be painful for Villa faithful. But such is the time now for the club that they might have to sell him. From Spurs point of view, they will certainly not want to pay the quoted amount for a squad player. Maybe they can reach to an agreement when Villa lowers the price for the midfielder.
