Tottenham Hotspur continue to put pressure on Manchester United for a possible transfer of 22-year-old attacker, Anthony Martial. The Spurs want to give the Frenchman an escape from the clutches of Jose Mourinho but are facing competition from their local rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Martial’s departure from the Old Trafford can be allocated as high odds in the betting market after watching him get dropped from the 23-man France squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Didier Deschamps decided to choose regular starters like Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann over the ex-AS Monaco man.
Hardly anyone can fault the French boss over his decision since Martial has been more of a benchwarmer than a cemented starter in the United squad in the past two seasons. His involvement with the Red Devils reduced significantly after his debut season under Louis Van Gaal.
At first, he was the uncontested number nine under the Dutch head coach and was dazzling the Premier League with his prolific scoring and dribbling abilities. However, right on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival from Paris Saint-Germain, the 22-year-old got demoted to a more sporadic role in the side and even got shifted out of his natural position to the flank.
Currently, Romelu Lukaku holds the starting spot in the strike and Alexis Sanchez on the left flank with Marcus Rashford as the more preferred backup option. Mourinho did field the latter as a similar rotational option as Martial last season but the Frenchman is still the one with the higher odds of making a club exit. Rashford is younger and is a product of the United academy.
It seems only a matter of time before some European team picks up the skilful forward for a hefty price tag. Mourinho is not the biggest fan of selling to direct rivals but might have to cave if the player raises exit talks.
Martial, although managed to play his best football as a striker in the Premier League, he is well capable of playing from the wide areas. Tottenham would turn out to be a perfect escape for the Lyonnaise academy product and Martial the right fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s system.
