Rangers took a huge punt by appointing Steven Gerrard as head coach to take them back to their glory days. Gerrard officially started his reign from this Friday and his first job will be to ensure that they keep hold of their key players. One of them is Josh Windass who seems to be attracting attention from Premier League clubs after a decent season at the Ibrox Stadium.
The new boss had apparently made it clear with Mark Allen, Gers Football director, that a bid for Josh Windass will not be entertained in the summer. The attacking midfielder was one of the better players for them in yet another dismal campaign where Celtic went away with all the honours.
The Englishman managed 18 goals in all competitions which was the joint highest for them in the 2017-18 campaign. He even provided 8 assists and was a crucial player for Teddy Bears upfront.
It is being reported that Gerrard met the attacking midfielder face to face in Dubai last month and urged Windass to ignore the speculation regarding his move to the English topflight.
It is clear that Gerrard wants to rebuild and bring in reinforcements in the summer. They already have some holes to fill in quite a few positions and the Gers will not want to have another headache by selling Windass in the summer. Yes, they might attract a good bid for him from Premier League clubs but at the moment, he is indispensable in their current lineup.
On top of that, they don’t have a lot of options in the attacking midfielder role. They have been linked with a move for Dylan McGeouch but it seems like he will be more like a backup option for Windass.
The Teddy Bears cannot boast a lot about their squad depth and letting go of their highest scorer will be criminal from the fans’ point of view. The 24-year-old signed a new contract in February and he is set to remain at the club until 2021.

It is certainly a good move from Gerrard as he personally approached the player and the Football Director to make it clear that Windass is an integral part of his plans in the upcoming season. The 24-year-old might be tempted of playing in the Premier League but he will most likely be a squad player at those clubs. Maybe after another good season at the Ibrox, his stocks will rise and then he can probably make a move to his homeland.
