Watford has reportedly extended the contract of veteran defender, Miguel Britos for one more season. This should come as a boost for the Hornets faithful who have seen Britos take the pitch 68 times for the club. The Hornets have also announced the parting of ways with two U23 players, Brandon Mason and Charlie Rowan.
Britos has played an integral part in securing the club’s place in the Premier League. He made just 10 appearances last term due to an unfortunate foot injury which saw him miss out on 3 months of action.
His debut was not the most illustrious in his playing career for the Golden Boys, being sent off against Preston North End in the Carabao Cup match on 25th August 2015. Britos did make an impact for the remainder of his first season with 27 appearances at the back.
He had been called upon after his impressive bouts for Serie A sides like SSC Napoli and Bologna. Britos’ name was spun around the Italian first division with brimming compliments. He played in 78 games for Bologna which prompted Napoli to initiate the €9m transfer switch in the summer of 2011.
He subsequently appeared in 99 games for the Light Blues but still was not considered for the Uruguay national team. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall, Britos might not be the most prolific names in the Premier League but certainly gets the job done.
At 32, he could perform as an ideal backup to Javi Gracia’s needs. Watford are already well stacked in the centre-back department with names like Sebastian Prodl, Christian Kabasele, Tommy Hoban, Craig Cathcart, Younes Kaboul, Adrian Mariappa and Molla Wague.
However, within the demands of top-flight football, one can never tell when a player might come handy especially if the majority are suffering from injury concerns.
Watford fell off the winning grid the last term right around the Christmas mark. They had started off the 2017/18 season in blistering form, challenging Burnley for one of the European spots. However, it all came crashing down when then-manager Marco Silva got linked with a move to Everton. A series of winless games followed and the Portuguese coach was offed from his position.

The Hornets ended up finishing the season in the 14th spot of the points table with not much to pick out of their second-half campaign. While Gracia gets to work on making improvements for the upcoming season, keeping experienced heads like Britos certainly helps in holding the team’s structure.
