Rangers are on their way towards making a massive overhaul this summer ahead of the 2018/19 season. Signing a prestigious name like Steven Gerrard as their manager and an experienced player like Scott Arfield gave fans the assurance they need for the near future.
This is undoubtedly a massive boost for the Ibrox side who have been taking it on the chin since the end of the previous campaign. The 5-0 thrashing from their bitter rivals, Celtic is still festering as a fresh wound only to be curbed with the hopes of a successful 2018/19 season.
It will take a significant amount of restructuring from the coming transfer window to even place the slightest bit of challenge to the Celtic dominance in the Scottish top-flight.
However, the player acquisition plan has not exactly progressed as per the books with most of the targets proving to be far too expensive. The Gers will have to bring in able bodies with the little financial leverage they have. While Gerrard continues to look into either veteran or Liverpool players, here are a few free agents the Scottish outfit should consider bringing in.
Jan Kirchhoff
The defensive midfielder played for the relegated Sunderland in the 2016/17 season. Kirchoff can be fielded as a centre back as well as a midfielder with his impressive technical abilities. He proved to be handy in Allardyce’s tactics to save the side from falling to the bottom three which unfortunately failed.
The 27-year-old left the Black Cats last summer and could fancy another crack in top-flight football after spending most of his career in his native Germany. He did sign a short-term contract with Bolton Wanderers until the end of the previous season and is currently in the market as a free agent.
Carlton Cole
The former West Ham forward is searching for a new club after returning from a spell in Indonesia with Persib Bandung. He has registered over 50 goals in the Premier League and is currently without a club. At 34, he can bring experience and scoring pedigree to the attacking lineup, behind the likes of Alfredo Morelos. Besides, as Kenny Miller has already been banned from taking any more part in any activity on or off the pitch and Eduardo Herrera is already being linked with a move back to Mexico, his acquisition can be a good one for Gerrard, at least for a short term.

Patrice Evra
The Frenchman still wants to be in the picture but does not have a club to play for. Ending his short spell with West Ham United has left him with few options to choose from, aged 37.
